P5  Miss Rasul & Mrs Buchanan

P5 have had a very busy last term which included lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning.
P5 will be learning all about China for their last term. We will be comparing and contrasting modern day China to Ancient China. Children have located China on the map and are very excited to learn more. P5 will become familiar with Chinese festival, culture and some of the most famous attractions in China. They will be given the opportunity to showcase some of their fantastic learning during the School Show.
Please ensure that children bring their reading books to school every day. Home reading is also an extremely important part of preparing for follow up work in class. We therefore encourage all parents/carers to ensure that children get the opportunity to read at home.
We are continuing to incorporate Active Literacy within our Learning. Children are expected to practise their spelling words at home, whenever possible. We will continue to carry out a weekly spell check and dictation in order to keep track of progress. Children’s spelling tests were sent home at the end of last term to allow parents to identify words they are having difficulty with. Regular practice at home will help develop their spelling skills further. We are continuing to work on expanding our vocabulary when writing sentences and children are therefore encouraged to include a variety of adjectives, openers and connectives within their writing. We are beginning the term by focusing on character description and setting.
Neat handwriting and good presentation will continue to be reinforced as children work towards P6. It would be helpful if this is also encouraged at home in homework activities – thank you!
Some of the number areas that we will focus on this term include negative numbers, fractions and decimals, expressions and equations, whilst also consolidating previous learning. We will continue to enhance our written as well as mental strategies. Children enjoy online games that consolidate prior and current learning (e.g. ‘Hit the Button’ on www.topmarks.co.uk ).
Other areas that we will cover include time, which we will revisit from time to time, measure (weight), information handling and shape.
We will continue to focus on mental maths and problem solving during daily starters. The challenge area is being utilised well by children, as they always enjoy an extra challenge.

Please remind children to bring their PE kit. P5 are very privileged to have been selected to participate in a handball tournament. They thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Furthermore, Active Schools have organised a lunchtime Hockey Club (Thursdays) and an after school Rugby Club (Thursdays) for Primary 5. We encourage all children to take part as it is an excellent opportunity for children to develop skills of team-work, responsibility, leadership and resilience.
We will continue Churches and Worship as our R.M.E. topic and then move on to Weddings in Islam. In health and wellbeing we will be looking at developing self awareness about our own feelings and how we should treat each other.
Children work very hard every day to collect their ClassDojo points. It is having a positive impact within the class and we hope it will continue to promote positive behaviour and hard work amongst children. Please encourage children to take their time when completing homework. An acceptable standard of homework should include extended sentences which consist of connectives, a variety of openers, adjectives and appropriate presentation.
Please do not hesitate to share any concerns or questions through letter or direct contact at 3pm. Thank you for your continuous support!
