The topic this term is Africa. The children will learn about different cultures, traditions and music within the continent. There will be lots of opportunities of Art, Drama, Dance and Music which will help us when producing our class assembly and school show! We will learn traditional tales from African countries and will learn all about the animals that live there too
We are continuing to develop literacy through the Active Literacy programme. This involves daily reading, phonics, spelling and a taught writing session. The focus this term will be focusing on developing our independent writing skills. Miss Hood loves it when we add detail to our writing! We will continue to develop word building using digraphs and explore rhyming patterns. We will continue to participate in shared reading with the teacher, with a partner and independent reading. At home we should be able to answer and ask questions as part of shared reading. We will also focus this term on handwriting and letter formation. Now that we know all the letters in the alphabet we have to make sure we are forming them correctly – please encourage this at home. We will also continue with Show and Tell this term, focusing on self-assessment of our presentations.
Suggested websites:
http://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/literacy/letterformation/  This website clearly shows correct letter formation.
http://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/literacy/firstwords/  This section of the website will help with sounding out words and spelling.

In Maths we will be working on Money which will involve coin recognition to £1 and adding amounts to 10p/20p consolidating addition. The children will further develop subtraction when giving change in role play activities in the class shop. We will be learning about data handling and how to present collected information on a graph. We will also explore aspects of measurement using practical and outdoor activities. Please encourage your child to use number, addition and subtraction on a daily basis to develop their knowledge and speed.

P.E. will be on a Wednesday and Thursday this term and Gym kit is required in order to participate. Please ensure the children’s clothes have their names on them so we can identify any lost items. Children can bring plain water to have on their desks during class time (apologies but no fruit flavoured). Communication, reading books and homework should be stored in book bags provided. Please try to ensure reading books are in the children’s book bags each day.Homework will be a monthly grid with elements of choice. New sounds and words will continue to be put in their tubs. A challenge task could be to use words from the word tub to build sentences and sounds to build words. This term the children will be taking turns to litter pick to help keep our playground clean and tidy.
Parents/carers are invited to our Assembly on the 18th May. The theme for the assembly is Africa. We will also be performing in the school show on the 14th and 15th June. More information will follow.
